Sensors and Measuring Systems

During the past years, HaloteC has designed and developed various measurement and control systems.
A number of recent examples are listed below:

Alcohol Fermentation Monitor (AFM)
The AFM is a user-friendly laboratory device for monitoring metabolic activity of six alcoholic fermentations simultaneuously. For each individual channel, the amount
of carbon dioxide that is produced is accurately measured. Temperature and stirrer speeds can be set for each channel individually.

The AFM instrument is equipped with very strong magnetic impellers, able
to properly mix viscous media such as hydrolysates.
Standard Schott flask (250ml or 500ml) can be used.
The instrument is operated and controlled with very user friendly and intuitive
control software.

brochures and world wide availability.

AFM Add-On's
The standard AFM instrument can be used for basic, anaerobic fermentations
such as alcoholic yeast fermentations. The instrument can however be extended
with a number of add-on modules, for pH and DO control, optical density measurements and active cooling.

HaloteC has developed special, baffled vessels for improved mixing, with ports that accomodate pH and DO sensors and for adding or removing material.

Available add-on modules include:
  • Two vessel types: 80-200ml and 150-400 ml
  • pH and DO measurement and control (multiple peristalic pumps per channel)
  • Active cooling units using high power peltier type thermo-electric cooling
  • Non-Invasive optical sensor for measuring liquid level, foam and optical density.
  • Control boxes (utility cubes) with sensor amplifiers, pumps and
    control electronics.

Multi MyControl (MMC)
The Multi MyControl is an advanced control system for controlling up to eight bioreactors. All processes can be controlled with a very intuitive touch screen
interface. Process values are stored locally in a database.
The system can be accessed through ethernet.

The MMC system is a platform that bundles multiple (up to 8) Applikon MyControl biocontrollers into one package. These biocontrollers are standard, Applikon Biotechnology bio-controllers.

The advantage of the MMC is that up to eight bio-processes can be controlled
with one very intuitive and easy to use touch screen interface.
This interface shows a dashboard with process data and set-points,or screens
for setting levels for alarms and warnings and for performing simultaneous
calibrations at once.

Moreover, the MMC system stores all process data in a database that can be
accessed via TCP/IP (ODBC). An MS ExcelTM add-in is available for accessing this database and perform data inspection, as well as for running experiments.

Temperature Gradient Incubator (TGI)
For research on food preservation it is important to determine the growth rates
of food spoiling micro organisms under conditions encountered during food
production and storage. Temperature is an important parameter. The TGI allows
for incubating up to a hundred 10ml vials at 20 different temperatures.

The TGI system consists of 20 5-socket rows for holding a total of one hundred
10ml glass incubation vials. The control software allows two temperatures to be
set (0 - 80 degrees C) at opposite ends of the matrix of vials. As a result, each
of the 20 rows of 5 vials will settle at a temperature between these two set points
in a linear fashion.

Current developments include extending the system with automatic measurement
of optical density and with mixing within each vial.
